Many children experience worry in ways they don’t yet have words for.
As a licensed clinical social worker working with children and families, I wanted to create a story that could gently open those conversations.
Raffi, a sensitive ring-tailed lemur, lives with his troop high in the trees of Madagascar. But loud sounds, new experiences, and racing thoughts make the world feel overwhelming. One evening he wanders into the moonlit forest where he meets a glowing comet moth who guides him along an unexpected path.
Through small challenges, moments of stillness, and eventually the wisdom of the Red Owl of the Blue Ombre Cave, Raffi begins to learn how to pause, breathe, and notice his thoughts instead of being controlled by them. When he returns to his family, he better understands how to calm his body and can finally get to sleep.
Ring Tail Raffi: Mindfulness in Madagascar introduces young children to emotional awareness and simple calming strategies in a gentle, rhyming story with beautiful hand-painted illustrations.
Includes interactive questions, a glossary and fun facts about lemurs.
Appropriate for children ages 6 - 10 and useful for families, educators and counselors supporting emotional awareness.

Shari LaRosa is a children’s author and licensed clinical therapist who believes stories can nurture resilience, build confidence, and help children recognize their unique strengths. With a background in elementary education and counseling, she blends her professional experience with a love of animals and nature to create engaging books that support emotional awareness and social-emotional growth.
Through her stories, Shari hopes to encourage meaningful conversations between children and the adults who care for them, helping young readers understand worry, practice coping skills, and develop a positive sense of self.
Shari is the founder of Connected Mind Counseling, where she supports children and families navigating anxiety and ADHD.
Her passion for writing grew from years of working with children who often struggled to explain their feelings. She discovered that stories allowed children to see themselves in a safe way — opening the door to conversations, confidence, and connection. Through the Kind Mind Author series, Shari aims to give children tools for emotional understanding while helping parents and educators feel more confident supporting them.
Beyond her work, she enjoys time with her family, reading, dancing, and spending time in nature — often finding inspiration for her animal characters and their thoughtful adventures.
